Where is the Diangana question now

The first thing to say is that I was as disappointed as most WH fans when he went. Also of course it is impossible to know how he would have performed in our side. The simple question that I have is if he had stayed would he have been in our present team? Also is his sale now looking like a good deal?

The old dour Sweatie Moyesiah employs the tried and trusted "keep the shirt" policy. The team wins everyone keeps their place. The idea being that it encourages those out of the team to play out of their skins when they get a chance to dislodge the bloke in front of them but at the same time the bloke in the team knows he cannot let standards slip or make a rickett etc. It can lead to situations, like now, where better players appear to be on the bench. But it keeps everyone in the squad motivated as they all know there are no obvious manager favourites and they will get chances to make a place in the first 11 their own.

Of course with no injuries or losses they may have to wait a while but we rack up some points as a result.

A "meritocracy" I think the management types call it?

Why would Benrahma walk straight into a team that’s playing well and getting results? Just enjoy the fact that we’re in a great place and have a quality player waiting to show what he can do when given the chance.

If Diangana's sale and transfer fee is proving to have been both warranted and inflated based on recent performances, I'm not sure how Zinedine Benrahma's future transfer fee is holding up?

Given that his more expensive replacement isn't in the team, not sure how simple that question is! We've also changed shape, so out and out wingers aren't really Moyes' demand at the moment. So, probably, No. But he COULD have been a solid option.

We've probably seen the last meaningful contribution of Snodgrass: Diangana would have been a logical next step?

We still don't know if Benrahma is any good at PL level...

He'll probably be more comfortable in the Championship next season, or, when Billic is sacked, he may prosper under a new manager.

We did have too many wingers (I think Sullivan actually meant attacking midfielders, but we can go with wingers if you want). Despite bringing in Benrahma, we now have fewer wingers than previously.

What's your point?

Honestly, I don't think the question is whether he would or would now have been playing for us and impacting the team now that he has gone.

I don't even think that was the main issue with the whole situation.

The issue was, once again, the absolute bullshit excuses from the club about reasons for selling a popular and promising player.

1. Money used to buy a defender.
2. We have plenty of cover in his position.

This was backed up when we spend a few million on Coufal and brought the Watford guy in on loan and then spend all our money (at least we may do when the loan becomes permanant) on another winger.

It's just a typical piss take from our owners regardless of whether it is good business for us.

I would like West Ham to try and buy him back when West Brom go down on the cheap

West Brom are dog shit, full of championship players bit unfair to judge him with dross around him imo

Plus we know Moyes did want to keep him in the first place and only sold reluctantly

I reckon if you're late in a game and you need a bit of magic from somewhere to nick a late goal, Benrahma is a far better bet than the offensively average Diangana.

Here are some boring stats about the playing time of players who playing in the championship last year.
This was Bowens intro to the PL after signing last season.

1st Game - not in squad
Next two games - on as late sub 80mins+
Next 11 games - Started (subbed off in 7 of them, 6 late in the game)

Benrahma so far

1st game - not in squad
2nd game - not in squad
3rd game - on for 1 min
4th game - on for last 12mins
5 game - unused sub.

After two sub appearances, Bowen then became a regular in the squad and his work rate, pace and direct running made a difference to our results. This season he is a regular starter. Benrahma not really given a chance yet.

Dianganas start at West Brom

Started first 7 games - subbed off in 3
8th game on as late sub
9th game started and subbed off.

In terms of playing time I find it hard to believe Diangana would have got much playing time or dislodged either Bowen or Fornals in the system we have adopted. He is currently getting decent playing time even though West Brom are not performing as a team so if he wanted starts it was the right move for him.

Whether keeping him would have allowed us to play another way or would have improved our options we will never know. I still think he would have been a useful player and one who had a real connection to the club. Certainly looked up for it in pre-season.

Well we're not using his replacement with good effect for a lot more dosh.
I think Diangana would of been a better bet to bring on instead of Benrahma for the likes of the knackered Haller or better still Masuaku

Sullivan said on talksport himself.

We had 8 wingers so did not need him.

We then spent all the money and more on another winger.

Benrahma has played about 20 minutes since he arrived.

We can all say it was a good price but we did not re-invest the money where it was actually needed.

If you cut Diangana in half we don’t get anywhere near £18m for him. In fact he’d be out for the season at least.

I think the issue is that if you'd have cut Diagana in half you'd have seen "West Ham United" writ large running through his soul like a stick of rock. I suspect Noble saw that too which was why he was ryally pissed off at the sale.

Unfortunately, the same thing that kept Hoddle out of the England side would have stopped Diagana progressing at West Ham; his preferred position was already filled with no indication that it would soon be up for grabs.

I'm not sure that he chose the right club with which to progress his career, but I wish him well and hope he can make the step up.
